History and Heritage Preservation

Perry Sprawls

A major interest and effort of Perry Sprawls is the preservation and publication of records and representations of our past.. He works with families, organizations, and institutions to preserve documents, images, and especially memories that are the records of their History and Heritage.
A major emphasis is on taking action now before those items, especially memories, are lost forever. His personal projects range from  Barnwell County, South Carolina, where he was born and lived  as a youth to many countries of the World concentrating on the history of Medical Physics and Radiology, which is his profession.
An introduction and links to some specific projects are below.

Preserving Family History and Heritage

Records of events associated with a person's life, including birth, marriage, military service, places of residency, and death are produced and generally preserved by the various government agencies. As valuable as these might be to future generations interested in learning about  family members or their ancestors,  they do not provide a real representation of the many aspects of a person's life that are of value, like memories acquired by personally knowing and living along with them.  It is these valuable representations of a person's life that are not preserved as official records that are generally lost, destroyed, or forgotten as time goes on.
This specific project is encouraging and helping people to  "get with it now" and find, organize, and preserve records (documents, pictures, memories ) of family members, especially the recently deceased. A guide to a four step process encouraging generations to work together is provided on this website.

The Barnwell County Virtual Museum

As the Founder and Coordinating Director of the Barnwell County Virtual Museum, Perry Sprawls provided a project to both preserve and make available to all, anywhere in the world, representations of the rich history of Barnwell County, SC and its residents over the many generations.  This includes links to histories of the individual towns and communities.
A major purpose of the project is providing websites, orvirtual components, for the physical museums within the county.  Direct links to several are provided below.

The Museum can be visited and explored through this website.

The Williston Museum

Williston, South Carolina is Perry's hometown and of special interest for preserving its history.  A significant part comes from his personal experiences and memories.  In addition to producing the museum website he created several physical exhibits,  These are for the early telephone and telegraph systems that were used up until the 1950s.
The Museum can be visited through the website,

AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE CENTER
At the Clemson University Edisto Research and Education Center
Growing up and working on the Family Farm in the 1940s, when plowing was with mules, cotton was picked by hand, and wood was used for heating and cooking, provides the experience and perspective to create the website for the Agricultural Heritage Center.
A special purpose of the website is to introduce and invite visitors to the Heritage Center.  For the younger generations and students it provides a valuable lesson in our rural heritage that is not included in school classrooms.

Virtual Dunbarton
In the early 1950s the US Government took over a large section of Barnwell and Aiken Counties in South Carolina for the construction of a facility to produce nuclear bombs. It was officially named the Savannah River Project (SRP) but in the community it was generally known as "the bum plant".  All families, buildings, and even most of the cemeteries and graves were removed from the Site. The Sprawls Farm was just outside of the confiscated area and was not affected but the local Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and the farms and homes of relatives and friends had to be abandoned or moved.
Dunbarton was one of the small towns that was eliminated.  Perry conceived and developed Virtual Dunbarton, a website with many representations of the town of Dunbarton and the local community. He organized a group of former residents who worked for several years developing content for the website.
Perhaps the most significant is a list or directory of the families who were re-located and where they moved to. Families had the opportunity to move their homes to the surrounding communities.  Perry photographed many of these and they are included on the website.
