Class of 1956
Clemson University

Dear Class members, families, and friends,

I am sure you are aware that the General Assembly has recommended cuts totaling $25 million from Clemson University's core educational and public service programs this year.  Because of this funding loss, the bond market and general economic climate, we must temporarily delay the Academic Success Center's construction for 18 to 24 months.  This will allow us to conserve funds while we manage the $25 million budget cut, and respond to the current economic crisis.

The delay will help us avoid a recurring cost of about $2 million per year.  We have met with the contractors, and they are very willing to work with us.

Please be assured that we are committed to the academic Success Center and the facility which the Class of '56 is helping to fund.  As we determine how we will manage the $25 million cut, the Provost has reported that she is not recommending any reductions to the Center's programming.  It has a proven track record of helping students succeed in the classroom, retain their scholarships, and graduate on time.

Clemson University's priorities have not changed, but the current economic conditions warrant this prudent delay in the short term.

Please know that we value your support of Clemson University and the Academic Success Center.

Sincerely,

James F. Barker, FAIA
President
