GEORGETOWN ­ Louis Payton Parsons, 72, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at his residence.

Mr. Parsons was born in Georgetown December 1, 1933, a son of the late C.D. Parsons and Lucile McConnell Parsons. He graduated from Winyah High School and in 1956, received a B.S. in Horticulture from Clemson College. After graduation, Mr. Parsons served from 1956 until 1958 in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder.

Mr. Parsons was the founder and chairman of Parsons Nursery. In 1970, he was the President of the South Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association (SCNLA) and in 1994, he won an award for Outstanding Contributions to the Industry. Mr. Parsons was an Honorary Member in 2004 of the Southern Nursery Association. He was also a member of the Georgetown Co. Rural Water District Board, the Chairman and Director of the Georgetown Co. Water and Sewer District, and was on the Advisory Board for Carolina First Bank.

Mr. Parsons was predeceased by two brothers, Delmaine Parsons and Florin Parsons; and one sister, Velma Turner.

Surviving are: his wife, Sylvia Hearl Parsons of Georgetown; a son, L. Payton Parsons, Jr. and his wife, Wendy, of Pawley’s Island; two daughters, Ellen Parsons Thames and her husband, Tim, of Columbia, and Joy Parsons Clark and her husband, Brian, of Georgetown; three brothers, Ivan E. Parsons of Georgetown, Norman H. Parsons of Pinellas, Fla., and William H. Parsons of Barnwell; two sisters, Miriam L. Thomas of Murrells Inlet and Evelyn P. Weaver of Ocala, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Alice Louise Clark and Anna Katherine Parsons.

Funeral services were Thursday afternoon, May 25, 2006, at Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Stephen H. Wilkins. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
