C. Smith Chance, Jr.

Smith Chance Jr.,73, son of the late Clarence and Mildred Chance of Winston-Salem NC, died February 15, 2008 at AnMed Center, SC. Born August 31, 1934, Savannah, GA. Graduated from RJ Reynolds HS, Winston-Salem ’52; Clemson University ’56, BS, Textile Mfg. He met his future bride Jane Watts of Mountville, SC while both worked at the Clemson House.  He spent his career in the textile industry, retiring as a VP from Americal Corp. A bona fide southern gentleman, gifted raconteur and bon vivant, Smith could win over anyone. A devoted husband, father and company man, he was happiest when cheering on Clemson, golfing, singing along to music, and celebrating life with loved ones.

Survived by his wife Jane, of Central; son Rick of Battleground, WA; son Scott of Portland, OR; daughter Beth of Santa Cruz, CA; grandchildren Josh and Wes Chance; Adela and Charlie Weigel. Served in the US Army Reserve, member of Clemson Masonic Temple, ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA, member of ‘56 Golden Tigers Committee at Clemson University; Chairman, Bd. of Governors Desert Falls Country Club, Palm Desert, CA.

Memorial service was Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2:30 PM at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, Clemson, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Clemson University Foundation, PO Box 1889 Clemson, SC 29633. Designate: Class of 1956 Academic Success Center project, in memory of Smith Chance; or Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in memory of Smith Chance.
