Architect's Rendition of the Class of 1956 Academic Success Center |
|
A Brief History.... At its 45th Reunion in 2001, the Class of 1956 decided to adopt a project for its 50th Reunion, as is the tradition at Clemson. Co-chairmen were selected, and subsequently the '56 Golden Tiger Committee was appointed from a wide cross section of the class so that the interests of the class would be well represented. The committee then researched numerous projects suggested by the University administration. It was clear during this process that the committee wanted to do something unique. The committee learned that Clemson had a some support services for selected courses available to all students. At the time, this program was called the Academic Support Center. There was no dedicated building available for the center, and tutoring was conducted at various borrowed sites on campus. As the center expanded, the results indicated significantly improved academic performance by those students actively participating in a variety of services. Clemson was very excited about expanding the service to more courses and to more students and placed a high priority on construction of a building that would house academic support. Funding from a private source was needed to make the building a reality. The committee chose this project for the class because it was unique, it would improve Clemson, and it would change the lives of many students for years into the future. This project was a big challenge for the small Class of 1956. The committee had faith that the classmates had big hearts full of positive memories of the "Clemson Experience." In early 2008, and after seven years of work on the project, the class reached it's fundraising goal to make the building a reality. The groundbreaking ceremony on June 20, 2008,
signals the accomplishments of the Class of 1956
Academic Success Center Project. The class
takes great pride in this accomplishment and will
be honored by having its name on an academic
building in a beautiful spot at the heart of the
campus. The building and the program will be
a part of the legacy of a small class with a big
heart. |
